What is the Gospel? by Mandy Groce
Illustrated by Tessa Janes
Ages: 1st-4th Grade
God has some good news for you and it’s called the Gospel. “What’s the Gospel?” you say. It’s the good news that even though we sin and have disobeyed God, we can have life and joy as part of God’s kingdom. You see I don’t deserve God’s goodness, but he reached down and rescued me even when my sin had made me his enemy. This book explains what the Gospel is – not just parts of it.
This book does what you would guess from the title, explains the Gospel to kids. The picture book follows a kid through asking various people about what the Gospel is. Even though this is intended for Preschool age kids, I think there are two many words, especially big words, to hold their attention. The intention of this book is to present the truth of the Gospel, not call someone to action at the end. I especially like that it makes a point that you won’t ever understand everything about God. I notice that being a piece kids (and even some adults) struggle with. So if you have kids that are starting to ask questions, but are at the beginning of their ownership journey, this would be a good book to start them with.
Christmas. It presents a clear understanding of the Gospel that makes it not a check for baptism, but rather something that affects your whole life.
